Planetree Makes a Difference
Shady Grove Adventist Hospital celebrated it’s one year anniversary as a Planetree affiliate in June, 2006. Evidence of the Planetree patient-centered philosophy of care is present in both the physical structure of the hospital, as well as the environment of care and healing as well.
The new lobby comforts those who enter with elements of nature: natural light, stone floors, and water elements. Community volunteers play the lobby piano on most days, interacting with visitors, patients and staff, accepting requests for favorite pieces.- The GetWellNetwork system has been implemented on the oncology unit, (as well as orthopedic, and postpartum units, helping patients and their visitors stay "connected" with their world.
- Complementary therapy has been made available. During the past year, three licensed massage therapists have contracted with the hospital to provide massage to patients at the patients’ request. Acupuncture will soon be offered to patients as well.
The National Institute of Health estimates that as many as 62% of the American public use some form of complementary therapy, of whom the greatest utilizers are persons with cancer. Among the most popular modalities used for healing purposes are massage and acupuncture.
- Pet therapy benefits all who come in contact…patients, staff and visitors. Currently the active program includes two therapy dogs. The dogs’ visits offer patients distraction from pain and loneliness and reduce the stress experienced by visitors as well as staff.
- The hospital environment provides for a quieter time due to reduced overhead paging and designated quiet time on patient units. This quiet environment is much more conducive to healing for patients, as well as caregivers.
Employees of Shady Grove Adventist Hospital continue to attend a half-day Planetree Retreat, where they focus on the patient-centered philosophy of care. Together, we are striving to provide an extraordinary experience for patients who seek healing at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital.
